Li Qing TaiLi Qing Tai likes to think she’s one of the guys. Creative and intelligent, she’s been a victim of racism for the younger part of her life despite growing up in a Western society. The taunts still hurt somewhat but she has learnt that getting mad is much less effective than getting even. She can sense racial intolerance a mile off but has so far refused to react towards Simon’s shunts. She’s a whiz at anything electrical and electronic but give her a simple crossword puzzle to solve and she’s completely out of her depth. Although she’s fairly apt in the area of problem solving, she would rather tackle a problem head-on than sit around for hours on end mentally juggling infinite possibilities. When you are the only child of traditional Asian parents, life can be rather confined especially when they don’t quite understand the relaxed Australian lifestyle. Both Li Qing’s parents are well-respected doctors within the Chinese community and were horrified when she told them she was joining the police force. While the relationship with them is still rather delicate 12 years on, her parents are slowly beginning to learn that you can’t always protect your child by wrapping them up in cotton wool. |
